Project RemO2val Phase 1 completion

Feb 11, 2026

After a fast paced and rewarding discovery phase, UESO is pleased to share that Project RemO₂val has officially reached its end-of-phase milestone.

This innovative feasibility project explored if GB can safely enable higher oxygen limits in the gas system to support increased biomethane entry—unlocking future low‑carbon potential for the NTS gas network. The work assessed oxygen removal technology, alongside inhibitor and coating solutions to protect underground storage assets from corrosion risks associated with elevated O₂ levels.

UESO was a partner in the project with its members providing invaluable information regarding the physical and operational characteristics of the GB storage fleet.
The project has strengthened understanding of technical feasibility, corrosion impact, and commercial considerations, aligning with the broader ambition to support 1% O₂ exemptions and enable greater biomethane volumes onto the NTS.

We now look forward to sharing the outcomes more widely through an upcoming National Gas online dissemination event soon and publishing the project report on the FEN portal —continuing the conversation on how innovation can unlock a more flexible, sustainable gas system.
